A Markdown editor that respects your words and your privacy
Wordpad is a free, browser-based Markdown editor with a live preview, inline Mermaid diagrams and KaTeX maths. It has no accounts, no servers and no tracking. Every keystroke stays on your device.
What it does
- Live preview. Write Markdown on the left and see the finished document on the right. The two panes scroll together, and you can switch to a writing-only or reading-only view at any time.
- Mermaid diagrams. Put a
mermaidfenced code block anywhere and Wordpad draws the diagram as you type: flowcharts, sequence diagrams, class and state diagrams, Gantt charts, pie charts, mind maps, timelines and Git graphs. Templates for each are one click away. - Mathematics. Inline
$…$and display$$…$$maths are typeset with KaTeX. - Syntax highlighting for more than forty programming languages, in both the editor and the preview, with one-click copy on every code block.
- Everything GitHub-flavoured Markdown offers: tables, task lists, footnotes, strikethrough, automatic links and smart typography.
- A document library. Documents autosave to your browser as you type. Create, rename, search, duplicate and delete them from the sidebar.
- Export. Download as Markdown, as a self-contained HTML file with diagrams embedded, or as PDF through a print-optimised layout. Copy the rendered HTML to paste into email or a CMS.
- Open and save real files. In Chromium-based browsers you can open a
.mdfile from disk and save straight back to it with ⌘S. - Share by link. Pack a document into a URL and send it to anyone. The recipient's browser unpacks it locally; no server ever sees the content.
- Works offline and installs as an app. Light and dark themes follow your system. A command palette (⌘K) and full keyboard shortcuts keep your hands on the keys.
Privacy by construction
Wordpad is a static website. The server only hands your browser the editor itself; it never receives your documents, titles, diagrams or settings. Documents live in your browser's local storage. Shared links carry the document in the URL fragment (the part after #), which browsers never transmit to a server. There are no analytics, cookies or third-party scripts.
Because your documents live only in your browser, clearing site data will remove them. Export anything you would miss.

Frequently asked questions
Is Wordpad free?
Yes. Wordpad is completely free, with no accounts, subscriptions, adverts or usage limits.
Where are my documents stored?
In your browser's local storage on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server. Clearing your browser data will remove them, so export anything important.
How does sharing work if nothing is uploaded?
The document is compressed and encoded into the link itself, after the # symbol. Browsers never send that part of a URL to the server, so the content travels only inside the link you share.
Which diagram types are supported?
Everything Mermaid supports: flowcharts, sequence diagrams, class diagrams, state diagrams, entity relationship diagrams, Gantt charts, pie charts, mind maps, timelines, Git graphs and more. Write them in a fenced code block tagged mermaid.
Can I use Wordpad offline?
Yes. After your first visit the app is cached by a service worker, so it loads without a connection. You can also install it as an app from your browser menu.
How do I export to PDF?
Choose Export, then PDF. Wordpad opens your browser's print dialog with a clean, print-optimised layout of the preview; choose "Save as PDF" as the destination.
